Echinodorus

E. radican var. Marble Queen is an aquatic perennial, commonly known as Melon Sword. It has large, medium green leaves mottled with creamy white to pale yellow patches. In the summer, small flowers resembling those of Sagittaria, are produced on top of arching stems; they are light purple fading to pink. This plant grows up to 3 feet high.


Pot Cultivation


This plant is fairly hardy; however, in regions where temperatures dip below -10� F some kind of winter protection is necessary or they may be brought indoors as houseplants. Grow Melon Sword in rich soil in 2-gallon or larger containers. They should be covered with up to 2 inches of water and set in a sunny or partially shady location.


Propagation


They may be increased by dividing their roots, by sowing stratified seed, or by planting viviparous plantlets.
